Friends of Australian Rock Art install billboard in Tanya Plibersek’s electorate

Friends of Australian Rock Art have installed a 19-metre billboard in Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek’s electorate, urging her and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to protect the ancient Murujuga rock art from Woodside’s Burrup Hub pollution.

Please chip in to help us continue our advertising campaign. We want to keep spreading the word about threats to the Murujuga rock art.

According to scientists, acidic emissions from Woodside’s Burrup Hub have already degraded the Murujuga rock art. Woodside is seeking federal approval for a 50-year extension of the North West Shelf gas export facility at the Burrup Hub. Scientists warn continued pollution could destroy the rock art within decades.

Voters in the eastern states may not be aware of what’s happening at Murujuga – but we need them to care.

That’s why we’re raising funds to keep our advertising campaign going. We'll support the billboard with targetted social media ads, and if we raise enough, run more physical ads.

FARA recently visited Parliament House in Canberra alongside traditional custodians of Murujuga, the Conservation Council of WA and the Australian Conservation Foundation to brief politicians on the threat to the Murujuga rock art.

At Parliament House, Murujuga custodian Samantha Walker said:

“Murujuga is a very important and sacred place to us. The disturbance that’s happening out there is a kick in the teeth.

“Murujuga is a part of us. It’s a part of our identity. My old people have been fighting this fight for a really long time.

“We are suffering. The country is crying out for protection.”

Help us to protect Murujuga’s spectacular heritage values. The ancient rock art of the Burrup Peninsula is a treasure for the whole world.
